BMX AS A SPORT OF FUTURE GENERATIONS
In the last Olympic Games of London 2012 Colombia’s people learned of BMX as sport with the gold medal of Mariana Pajon in the women’s final of BMX and the bronze medal of Carlos Mario Oquendo in the men’s final of BMX. But what is the meaning of BMX? , what was its beginning? , and what is its importance in Colombia? This article describes these aspects of BMX in Colombia as a sport in the future.
Scott Breithaupt (1970)
BMX (Bicycle Motocross) is a category of acrobatic cycling from California since the 60’s when a young man named Scott Breithaupt decided to imitate the competitors of motocross on his bicycles. Bob Haro was the first person that used BMX to do freestyle tricks. He is considered the father of freestyle. In 1981 the International Federation of BMX was founded. In 1982 was the first World Championship of BMX. From 1993 BMX has been integrated into the International Cycling Union (UCI). That is the reason BMX is a game and an Olympic sport. BMX debuted in the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. BMX has different tricks (around 100 tricks and several combinations) like Backflip, Frontflip, Tailwhip, Decade, No-hands, Superman, Barspin, 360 turn, Footjam, Turndown.
BMX has two categories: Race (where Colombian woman won the gold medal) and Freestyle. In 1976 BMX was introduced in Colombia by Ricardo Arango who was influenced by BMX-action magazines decided to practice for first time BMX in Medellin.
In my opinion, the future of BMX in Colombia as a sport for future generations is positive. BMX is going to be the favorite sport in the country. It is an uncommon sport but it will emerge as new activity that young people will practice and enjoy.
